Naming your pet?

Just wondering what thoughts you guys have on naming your pets. Do you name them after celebrities, fictional characters, people you've met? Do you give them proper names or maybe just a descriptive name ("Smoky", "Precious", etc.)?

I ask because my sister is considering getting a cat, and at one shelter she met a cat named "Pizza Party", which seemed a little weird.

I wanted something unique for my dog. A name that was also a part of me. So I came up with Ty. Tae Kwon Do was a martial art I was taking at the time I got my pug so I began calling him Tae or Tai and then later shortened it to just Ty.

When i was a kid i always picked "cute" type names for my cats, such as "princess" or "lovie"; then when I was first on my own I had a black cat with total white paws so he was called "boots" and his brother - all black - "midnight"....not too creative, but the names fit. Then i got a cream and white coloured kitten who reminded me of vienna fingers so I called her "cookie"....the next decade, after marriage and children, saw another all black kitten we called "ashes". Then, when we moved here, we had at the time no cats, but plans to get one. I was visiting my mom, and on my way home I passed by a bailbondsmans office with a "kittens for free" sign. unable to resist, i went in, and came home with the cutest orange tabby withwhite mittens and boots - we called him gingerbread for the colouring, which kept getting shortened to "ginger" - unfortunately for him lol.....He was supposed to be my "grow old with me" cat - the one who would keep me company when the kids got older and left home...but it was not meant to be - he died recently due to complications from f.a.t.e. - in my arms, the way he came into our home....
we now have a new kitten - a rescue one - five months old - my 14 yr. old son, an avid chess player, named him "rook". His full name is Rook Ethecat.
We were taking care of three outdoor cats for a while ; two obvious strays and one feral. We named the feral one "nasty" due to his temperment; the one stray, female, very feminine but scared to death we called "skitty" and the other - so skinny when we first saw him - "scrawny". Well, eventually Scrawny filled out, and Skitty became less afraid. And Nasty got fixed so was a bit more pleasant. We had hooked the feral cat up with a rescue place, but unfortunately, the other two didn't make it. I'm always keeping my eyes open for any other neighborhood strays, though. At least now I know who to call if i find any.

my cat at my parents is named Kurt, or Kurtis.

i tend to like to name my pets with normal names insted of "fluffy" or anything like that

I named my tabby after a cartoon (Invader Zim), she does weird things like the little green guy does and she seems to think she dominates the house. It seemed to fit.
My grey cat is named Inu, which is dog in japanees which he acts just like a dog and it seemed fitting ;).

Naming your animals is your own experiance really ;)

why are racing horses and dogs given such long, strange names? like The Lucky Stiff, or something like that? whats wrong with just Charlie of Lucky? why 2 or 3 word names?
