Naming your pet?

Just wondering what thoughts you guys have on naming your pets. Do you name them after celebrities, fictional characters, people you've met? Do you give them proper names or maybe just a descriptive name ("Smoky", "Precious", etc.)?

I ask because my sister is considering getting a cat, and at one shelter she met a cat named "Pizza Party", which seemed a little weird.

why are racing horses and dogs given such long, strange names? like The Lucky Stiff, or something like that? whats wrong with just Charlie of Lucky? why 2 or 3 word names?

Some are registered with the AKC(for dogs) so they have a full registered name. But they do have nicknames(uno the beagle? first beagle to win best in show at the Westminster dog show. the reason i bring him up is K-Run's Park Me in First, is registered name but his owner calls him by what they call a "call name" which is Uno.

*note from susy : some of this information was taken off espn(i AM NOT JOKING)website>just google first beagle and you'll find it)

I think a pet should be named according to his character or in my case with my puppy we named him after a place that was meaningful both to me and my husband. We met in Brooklyn, he lived inBrooklyn all his life and still works there even tho its a 3 hour commute. Maybe they named him/her after something funny he/she did at a pizza party or was given at a pizza party or maybe his colors resemble a pizza I dont know.. But good luck with that.

Ok I have a little situation that i would liek to hae some input on if you all don't mind. I found out about this little male English Bulldog puppy who has been turned over to the shelter, from what information I have, the people who had him abused him, they tried to burn a microchip out of his ear with a lighter, they injured his back leg, and he has a few other problems. They named him Hydro, I can only guess as to why. what I would like to know is what is some of your opinions about a new name for this little guy, he deserves to leave all that behind him and have a fresh start, he is only 5 or 6 months old so I know he would adjust to a new name, But I want it to be spectacular, so any ideas would be of great help. I have been told he is white with brindle markings on his ears paws and butt. Thanks for the help.

I have no paticular approach to naming my animals, it depends on their personalities, and their looks. i have 3 English Bulldogs, Myah- I picked her name before I ever brought her home, Then there is Blondie and Brownie- They have the names they have because when ever we have a litter of puppies we do not name them we just give them names that help us tell who they are. Boo- she is my terrie, I origanlly gae her the name Bessy at birth because she looked like the Mary Moo figurines, and the fact that she is black spotted over white base coat, like the cow. It later at about 4 weeks old was changed to Bessy Boo because as she started growingher black spots started having a shadowing effect around them and it was around holloween, and at anyrate the Boo stuck and bessy kinda ran off I guess.LOL

No "Precious" for my cat. He's a 17 lb. orange and white DSH tabby who I named Samson. The only thing I trim on him is his nails. If i were to trim his hair/fur.....

I am always accused of having weird names for my family, but each name sticks and suits them to a tee!! I always go with their personalitys and something always jumps out..I have twin cats and as kittens they were very entergetic. Well we couldnt tell them apart so we started callin them Tootie Frootie like the song. And it stuck. Everytime they play around the house that song plays in my head.Munchie love nibbles on my son. Prissy is a princess. So on you get the idea.

When my boys were in the 4th & 5th grade we rescued 2 cats whose owner had been killed while his cats were at the vets being fixed. One was a white female and very, very skitsey and spent most of her time besides the litter box, hiding under our dryer. They named her 'useless'. The other was a pure black male who had THREE (3)) only white hairs under his chin.
They named him 11:30 CUZ he wasn't quite midnight.

I always felt like an idiot when I would have to go to the door at night and call him...
"Here 11:30...here 11:30............!" Kids! (gotta love 'em!)
