ASPCA Online Community

Hi! Ready to Rock This Forum?
Thank you for visiting the ASPCA discussion forum. We are committed to allowing freedom of expression for our members, and that includes maintaining a safe space for people with opposing views to express themselves. We get posts from all over the country and even the globe, so needless to say, people come with different viewpoints on animal welfare. We see this diversity and variety as a real strength-- dialogue and debate are an integral part of the educational process, as well as an important tool in exploring different sides of complex issues.

ASPCA Code of Conduct
Okay, I know we said we want you to have the freedom to express yourselves. And we do. But a few rules never hurt, right?
• Be nice! No flaming. Many posters come here for information, not to be called names.
• Please respect the different backgrounds and education of posters—especially when it comes to diverse perspectives on animal treatment. The best thing you can do for animals is politely educate on how to protect them.
• No one needs to hear you correct them on proper grammar and spelling. Let’s talk animals, not the difference between affect and effect.
• Wanna talk about religion and race? Well, we don’t. We wanna talk about animals.
• Don’t gang up with other posters against one person. It’s not nice! Better to stick to animal talk.
• Did I mention you should…talk about animals? Cool! Now get to it and have fun!

Medical Questions:
Please, please, please do not submit questions about emergency medical problems here. If you think that your pet is sick, contact your veterinarian. Self-diagnosis or delay seeking proper veterinary care may worsen your pet's condition.

Questions for the ASPCA:
While the ASPCA staff does monitor the ASPCA Community, we can't always answer individual questions via the discussion boards. If you have a question for the ASPCA, please visit www.aspca.org or send me a message via my profile.

Reporting Discussion Board Abuse:
To report discussion board abuse, please visit: http://aspcacommunity.ning.com/main/index/report.

All right, now that you've gotten the boring rules part out of the way, start postin' some animal love! Can't wait to talk to you!

Best,
Elyse

Do you live in NY? The ASPCA is only in NY. If so, call them and ask

Well that's not really a good humane way of going about it. I've done some google research and it seems that even trapping and relocating is not a good way because they live in large families. Google has good ideas about killing traps if you want one of those...I just hate killing animals tho

I dont know how to start a discussion so I will post this here. Does anyone know how to get rid of tear stains on dogs??
Thanks:-)

I would use a tear stain remover from a pet store.

Hi,
I was wondering if any of the members Aspca Community live in Missouri, there is a girl at work that is going over seas to be a missionary and has two cats that are litter mates and are 7 years old. Female and male and are fixed and litter trained. She is trying to find a home for them, she is living August 1st and if she doesn't find a home for them she is afraid she will have to put them to sleep. And the reason for that is she is afraid that if she turns them into the humane society here they won't get a good home. I am afraid I have to agree with her there ,I would never bring an animal there, based on the dealings I have had with them. Anyways if there is anyone that would please consider saving these cats, they are cuties and are tiger stripped, please email me here or at flyingcatfairy@yahoo.com . I trying to find them a good home.
Thanks, Dee Dee

Eating dogs in China. We as a nation need to boycott and stop this in China and send them a clear message that dogs are important to us.

I live in Fernley, NV. Its a small town, and I was wondering how to start volunteering for animals. I don't know if anyone else lives around here and has any suggestions, but if so let me know, because I don't think there are many opportunities to help out animals around here.

I posted this in comments yesterday: Maybe you could start here and either give or find a 'forever home' for this baby.
BTW, she came from Fernley where this disgusting piece of humanity dumped and caused the death of her litter mates and evidently your local police have risen to the occasion and are investigating. I am in Sparks....

Here I go again! Tue.July 15, 3pm, the phone rang and a neighbor (next door, in the apt. with a for rent sign for an empty unit that read in large letters "NO PETS", said, "I don't know if your son told you BUT.."we got got a kitten. It is about 6 weeks old and a friend took another litter mate from a batch found in a neighbors shed. Later the owner of the shed stuffed the rest of the kittens in a green garbage bag and tossed them out on the freeway..where an 18 wheeler hit and ran over them". Someone saw and reported this horror and the local police came to the friends house and asked if they could have a vet take a blood sample in order to assert the dead kittens were one in the same litter as the one they were known to have retrieved from the shed of the poor excuse of a human being neighbor. This occurred in another city about 40 miles away so THIS kitten was not tested as it had already been delivered to MY neighbor, here in Reno.
Sooo, their landlord is remodeling and restoring the rental next to theirs and had planned to do some cosmetic work on their unit..beginning This very afternoon. He is disabled and she just started a new job and they are terrified of being evicted. "Please, please" they said, can you take this kitty and find it a forever home. It came with food & H2O dish, kitty litter box, food and litter (and weepy eyes..not crusty just clear weepy).
There is a discussion elsewhere on this board, about "People who can't afford proper vet care have no business taking pets!!! (fortunately, in 10 years, I have only had 2 sick kitties)
So according to that principle, my answer should have been 'nope, sorry, I can't afford the necessary tests and shots nor the risk to my other healthy 10 forever rescues. (those are just the ones that I felt compelled over the last 13 years to keep, rather then expose severely physically damaged animals to ANY possibility of further abuse or loss. I COULD NOT SAY THOSE WORDS.

It is kitten season and the rescue groups, our no kill shelter and other rescuers are up to their necks in kitties.

She is a good little eater, female, long haired pure black with lots of spunk, a thick shiny coat and a clear nose, pink mouth and those weepy eyes. No evidence of upper respiratory distress. She has used her kitty litter box to piddle twice but evidently hadn't learned to cover her deposit yet. My others will no doubt show her by example..one can hope, anyway.

Sooo, if you are a Nevadan, from Lake Tahoe to Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Fernley, Fallon, or Stagecoach etc. and want to open your home and heart to to this baby who by sheer luck escaped the fate of her litter mates...message me. AND Bams, Michael, Renee, Linda if you spot this, I could use a tip or two of what to use to possibly address the eye issue without the obvious answer of a VET which this silly old widow can't afford on Medicare and Social Security. (unless it is a matter of life and death where upon I can and have used "rob peter to pay Paul." So far I am using clear water frequently to keep them dry and clean..would a boric acid solution be safe and/or useful. No sniffles, coughing or wheezing! I am such a sucker and I just hope with malice and forethought that the P.O.S. who threw these other babies to their inevitable death rots in hell. Bless the police who valued those little lives enough to do the amazing act of going after him. I grow many organic herbs..several sages, 3 mints, oregano, 2 thyme's, tarragon, basil, rosemary, chives, garlic, comfrey, ...comfrey is very healing for people but kitties..(I don't know). Oh My! Somehow, it always works out but this is a really bad time of the year. ;o(

GOOD NEWS!

Survivor mentioned in previous post HAS A NEW HOME.

A pretty young lady, Jessica whose daddy always buys my paperback sci fi books at our periodic garage sales stopped by and said "Daddy said come look at the kitty and see if she liked her" LOL a pretty girl and a fluffy little black ball of frisky fun........We have a discount shot clinic just three blocks away and a promise that she will ONLY be an inside kitty because our neighborhood has two resident Raccoons plus the biggest predators of all "Cars". Kitty should be named "Lucky" having escaped the fate of her litter mates plus a 'forever home' all in the same week. I feel better now! Somehow the Universe always seems to provide...and even if young miss Jessica hadn't fallen instantly in love, the little fluff ball was having a grand time with my motley crew.
