Found stray kitten

A stray kitten (about 6 months old) has appeared on my front steps, he/she is so cute. But when I took a close look at it has a lot of fleas. I cannot bring it into my house because I have a dog and I don't want my dog to get fleas as well. I have been feeding him/her and put a flea collar on it, I called a few shelters and only one was willing to help, but they would only take the cat if it’s neutered and vaccinated. Now I looked up the ASPCA mobile clinic and will be taking the kitten to get neutered but as I was reading the conditions the cat has to be vaccinated and in good health. Can someone give me any suggestions on what to do? I really want to help the kitten. Does anybody know if the mobile clinic will do everything as far as vaccinating, neuter and remove fleas in one visit?

FOR NOW AT LEAST WASH OFF THE SPOT WHERE YOU APPLIED THE DROPS..OK?

SOME COOKING OIL ON A PAPER TOWEL MIGHT WORK OK..THEN WASH WITH A LITTLE OF ANY GENTLY SOAP..GENTLY..BY NOW THE SPOT COULD BE IRRITATED..

IM SURE IT WILL ALL TURN OUT OK..GOD BLESS YOU..MARION

I feel horrible right now..........it's really late here so I can't take him a bath but I took damp paper towels with dishwashing soap wiped him down and then with some wipes. He doesn't show any signs of being uncomfortable or licking himself.

Okay maddy it you can't take him a bath now. Just wait until tomorrow get a flea and tick bath for cats. I am a volunteer animal rescuer. what do you plan to do after the kitten is well. Do you plan to keep it. I have dealt with this kind of situation many times. After the kitten is free of flea and ticks. You can take it the spay and neuter van to get it vaccinated and neutered. After two or three bathes the kittens will be alright and free of fleas and ticks. please keep me informed about this poor little cat. The van wil not help you with the flea and tick. keep me informed please.

I am going to give him up for adoption after he gets better. Getting free of fleas was my intentions so I can take him on Sunday for vaccinations and neuter. I just hope he will be okay, I had given him the drops about 7 hours ago and he seems fine and acting normal.

are you going to give him up to a shelter? If you are, give it to a non kill shelter. That is what i look up before i give any rescued animal i take it. Good luck and take care. God Bless you for what you are doing for this kitten.

Do not use the flea collar for this kitten. Flea collars do not work, and moreover, this kitten is too young to be exposed to the chemicals (flea collars shed powdery insecticide, which the cat then ingests) that these collars have. You can use a mild flea shampoo which will accomplish the same, but safer.

Everyone, I have wonderful news.....the kitten, now named Dante, is doing great. Last night I wiped off as much as possible of the Hartz drops with wipes and wet papertowels with dishwashing soap. So today I gave her a flea bath and my sister and I picked out every flea with our fingers and the flea comb. I have moved her into the laundry room so she is no longer outside. I will take her one more flea bath on Friday and she should be flea free. THANK YOU ALL.....for your advise, recommendations and support, I really appreciate it and I'm pretty sure Dante does as well. I just went to check on her and she is sleeping like an angel.

First off, you gotta give it a bath; hit up Petco or a store where they sell shampoo made especially for kittens for fleas. Depending on how bad it is, you might need to wash it more than once. THough i know you mean well, flea collars are bad, the cat will inhale the chemicals all day...not too good for 'em. Go online in your area and look up places for low cost spay and neuter. If you let me know where you are, I can find one for you. Usually those types of clinics will do it all, s/n and vaccinate. It's a shame that a shelter wont help you, but then again it is kitten season so they are probably busting at the seems with cats and kittens.
