So why was the neighbor threatening to kill the woman and her dog? Was the dog aggressive and the neighbor complacent? Was she lying to the cops when she said the neighbor threatened to kill her? Did they arrest the neighbor?
Imagine the scenario... Cops pull up, after getting reports that someone's life has been threatened. Any moment, things can explode. The center of the story walks out of her house with the German Shepherd on leash. The dog gets off leash and charges the cops or acts aggressively toward them which prevents them from protecting the woman against death threats. Imagine then that the neighbor who allegedly made the threats comes out. Now you've got the suspect, the victim and the victims dog coming at you from every direction. What started out as a call to take a report turns into a circus where the probability of someone getting hurt or killed is very real.
Ever been on the receiving end of an aggressive German Shepherd? Ever been a cop and have to respond to a call where someone's life has been threatened?
Maybe you're smarter than the cop or would have handled it differently. Maybe you should put on the badge and the uniform and do it better.
You only have her side of the story. You still don't have the facts. Nobody does until it comes out with reports from all parties.
The woman should have left the dog in the house and addressed the cops. How stupid of her to do that - knowing full well she couldn't handle her dog on leash. It was a tragedy waiting to happen.
What a shame. German Shepherds are wonderful dogs, but they have a bad reputation because many people who own them don't understand the breed and can't control them.
This posting is upsetting on many levels. I work very hard educating the public about German Shepherds. They have great temperments and if bred properly, make excellent family pets. Some breed for protection, others for temperment. I've had all kinds in my GSD rescue program. You get a protective shepherd (I have one, 110 lbs of all muscle, who... if I needed her to, would kill for me) and you have to train them to obey and follow you, their leader. Otherwise, you are sentencing them to a tragedy such as above.
It's these types of stories that take any progress that lovers of Shepherds have made and turn it backwards. If she took that shepherd out on a leash and lost control of it, it's her fault that the dog is now dead.
Susan, you made have had all types of GS, but still you are judging the breed. Not all GS are will attack just because it was got loose. It depends upon the situation of what is happening. I would have done it quite differently.
And they do NOT have a bad reputation. Why do you own one, then??? What makes you say that they couldn't have control them. Now who is assuming, uh?????
Wow, it seems like many cops need a lesson on what to do in the event a dog is coming towards you. I saw a show on Dog Whisperers about mailmen having problems with dogs on their route and what to do when a dog approaches you. Now, remember the only people that have weapons are cops and not anyone else. Cesar was able to show mailmen how to stop a dog in its track when they are charging at you.
Perhaps, a trainer can teach police what to do in the event a dog is coming at you instead of shooting it. Many dogs will run up to greet a person and it looks like they are going to attack. Again, not everyone can pull out a gun and stop a dog from coming at them. Cesar gave a loud command to stop many dogs in their tracks. I can't remember the other tips he had but it gave mailmen something to work with when they come across many dogs on their routes.
German Sheperds are great dogs.. I had one as a guard dog to watch me when I was little that my dad sent to training school and had a few after that in my adult life and my father in law had one. I don't believe that they have a bad reputation at all. Most people know them to be even tempered. Again, it comes down to how they are brought up and the ones that I have knowned are brought up to be excellent guard dogs and are friendly.
Cops shooting another dog, .... your right buckshot, these cops have options ... I think they just want to shoot their gun off, like pull that trigger to see what it feels like to kill .
German shepherds still have bad reputations that stem from the 70s. Yes, it does come down to how they are raised and treated, but the media has made them look like bad guys (did you see Underdog?) and aggressive. When I go for a walk with my shepherd we constantly have people stop and cross the street instead of walking past us. I have had people at the dog park ask if my dog is friendly, of course he is, he is happily playing with the other dogs isn't he? I have also had people ask if he bites. Adults make comments to each other that my dog will bite their leg off (my dog might sniff your leg, but he has never had an inclination to bite anyone's off).
I have always felt german shepherds are smart, loyal, sweethearts that are all around great dogs.
That cop had no right to shoot that dog.
I talked with the owner she is gonna post the " whole story on here, maybe today.
If the owner of the other dog shot in mobile would like to contact her e-mail me at buckshotrc@hotmail.com
first let me say my family is in law enforcement for generations as well as dog lovers of all kinds mostly german sheperds growing up
now me im the bully breed lover having rotties & pitbulls i never would have taken my boys out side to meet the officer upon arrival i leave the boys on the front porch when i go out front to greet someone cause i know if they dont like what is going on they will get through my screens to protect me & my kids!
i have also socialized them properly & they just love kids!
Your right on this Cindy. For the dogs protection and the Officier as well. You just never know what is going to happen and dogs have a keen sense of smell and they know when something isn't right.
