Just wondering what thoughts you guys have on naming your pets. Do you name them after celebrities, fictional characters, people you've met? Do you give them proper names or maybe just a descriptive name ("Smoky", "Precious", etc.)?

I ask because my sister is considering getting a cat, and at one shelter she met a cat named "Pizza Party", which seemed a little weird.

I have 2 cats...Preston was named after a bird in a pet store by that name. It was a really cool bird. Codee already had her name but I changed the spelling, they thought she was a boy. I also have 2 bunnies...Dutchess was named cause it was a cute name for a bunny...and Nala got her name cause she is a lion head bunny and Nala is the girl lion in the Lion King movie.

You could alway change it to Pizzaz or something similar.

I have a hard time with names. It took me nearly 9 months to name my daughter "Carragan".

haha, Pizza Party, a nice name. My cat names Snow but she is a black cat. I named my cat when the first thought came out. At the time, Snow popped out.

Our first dog was given to us. He was already named The Big Dog. The people that had him before had small lap dogs so he was called The Big Dog. At that time he was about 85 lbs. Later on we had a stray to come up. She was only about 20 lbs. The logical name for her was Little Dog. We lost her about 2 years later to a fungus. Last year at Thanksgiving we adopted a dog from the animal shelter. Her name is Minnie Dog. Can you see where this is going?
All of that being said all of our dogs have been "free" dogs and they are the most fun and most loving dogs. You could not have a pure breed that could be any better than our three!

My boyfriend named our one cat Pooka, after Tarot's familar from a comic he collects (she looks like that Pooka, but doesn't have wings or a point-y tail). We named my cat Bast, after we ruled out the names of the cats that pull Freya's chariot (because we couldn't pronounce them.) My hamster is Munchkin, because she's so cute and small. If we ever find a boy one-eyed anything it's going to be named Odin.

(And if you think a cat would act all dignifed for being named after a goddess, Bast is the friendliest, dimmest cat I've ever met. She just flops everywhere.)

I agree with Lea, names like Sunshine, Happy and the like make you smile when you say them. Sending out good vibes to the pet. I just got 2 new baby rats. They were really too young but they were from a snake/rat breeder and were "on the menu"that night. I couldn't help myself, I picked 2 little cuties from the cage. With permission of course.
I called them Nunu and Buddy at first. Then when I was sure they were both boys, they became
Nicky Nunu, and Stevey McQ, after Dr. House's rat. Even though he doesn't look like Steve McQueen on House.

I name my pets by their personality and the type of animal. Like my black cat was born in october and is spunky so i named him Voodoo. I named my orange cat Sassy because she only wanted me. I named my malamute kiera because it was a name that just looked fitting for her. So i am more of a unique name giver.

when i was 3 and my brother was 4, we found 2 abanded kittens and took them in. we decicded the females name should be Emma, but couldnt decide for her brothers. Because my brother was only 4, he wanted 2 name him Truck Driver! :D We couldnt think of any other names, so it stuck for a while....but then we all decided on Daniel. :)

Our dog's name at the shelter was "ketchup" and her sister, who we had just missed, was "mustard."

"Ketchup" just wasn't cute or girly enough! Kath looked at me and asked if I had any better ideas, and I looked up at our c.d. caddy in the truck's visor. The first c.d. I saw was "Ella Fitzgerald, best of the Songbooks." Hence, Ella! If we adopt a friend for her later, I thought about "Sarah" for Sarah Vaughan, or "Norah" for obvious reasons. For boys, maybe Miles, Dizzy, or hey, even Sting!

I like to observe the new animal until a name comes to me. Something unique for them. I like unusual names that fit the animal.

I've always been told to be careful what you name an animal because it usually lives up to it's name. For example- Puddles might make puddles all over your floor all of the time. I'm not sure if it's true...but I didn't want to find out.
