I own and operate an animal sanctuary (Safe Haven Farm) on my small farm. All the animals have been rescues over the past 14 years, primarily not adoptable due to health, behavior issues or old age.
Pet likes:
all my critters love to have a job of some kind and respond to my leadership so that they feel secure. I have a catery for some in my huge barn. The cats in the house are divided into groups based on compatibility (some just don't get along!). Thank God I have a huge house. All the cats are compatible with the dogs and will cuddle and sleep together.
Pet dislikes:
That's a tough question. I can say the dogs don't like it when I leave them or separate them from me but I do insist that they have time away from me. They have each other at those times and I must have some private time to do chores or just take a break. They have a dog yard attached to the garage and back deck or can roam the farm since the entire property is fenced with electronic gates so no one can enter without my giving them access.
Pet’s favorite spot:
My dogs will surround me when I'm sitting down somewhere and all rise to follow when I get up. I've trained them to stay though as it can get really crazy having a parade everywhere I go. The cats take turns it seems for lap time, usually while watching tv, reading or on computer. They love to lay on my desk on top of the papers while I'm trying to work!
Pet’s favorite toy:
I give the dogs lots of marrow bones after they have been used to make soup. I keep them in a basket and they just help themselves. It's great for their teeth too.
Pet’s silliest habit:
My GSP steals my shoes but won't chew them. She has trained me to put them up or in the closet (where they belong) or else I'm always in search of a shoe or boot.
Pet’s sweetest moments:
I have a coon hound who is semi-feral and very fearful and shy when outside because he was lost and roaming for many months before being brought here. In the house, he is relaxed and loves body spooning me in bed at night. He is a cuddle bunny then.
I crack up when my pet:
I have a Nubian goat who cracks me up when he shakes his head and his big long ears flap, flap, flap. He usually does this when I won't let him have his way and it's sort of a "hissy fit."
My pet is unique because:
Last summer some drivers knocked on my door saying a calico cat was hit by a car in front of my farm. She was feral but allowed me to wrap her in a towel and carry her to the vet in a box. She had sustained severe head trauma. They wired her broken jaw, gave me an IV bag, shots and said they didn't think she'd make it but I could try. Hand fed her for 6 weeks. She couldn't smell with a fractured nose. She had nearly bitten off her tongue and was permanently blind. The vet was surprised when I brought her back to have the jaw unwired. After that she was eating better, her tongue healing and I noticed her nose was healing too. Soon she started to lick from the spoon and then a dish and then ate with all the other cats, learning how to go from room to room and even uses the litter box. She is my miracle.
