Profile

Proud pet parent of:
Dustye Dohn, Howard E, Pennye Sue, Buster Bear
How we met:
All are rescue dogs of one sort or another. Dustye was abandoned by my neighbors when they moved in the middle of the night; Howard was a breeder dog; Pennye was rescued from a shelter as was Buster Bear
Pet likes:
Dustye likes me and Woofstock (a local humane society fundraiser)
Pennye likes everyone and everything, especially squirrels
Howard likes me and his basket
Buster likes everyone and everything...all of life
Pet dislikes:
Scary noises, new people, skunks, the annoying poodle next door and others. Four dogs have many dislikes.
Pet’s favorite spot:
Anywhere in the house I am and anywhere they can sleep
Pet’s favorite toy:
Each other
Pet’s silliest habit:
Buster's tail-chasing exploits and Pennye's tree watching for squirrels
Pet’s sweetest moments:
All of them. I love my babies
I crack up when my pet:
does just about anything
My pet is unique because:
They love me when others can't stand me and they watch over me when I don't do it myself

Thankful for my babies

With all the past things going on with Michael Vick and some of the things I've read on the ASPCA site, I am thankful that my babies have safe and happy homes. They are excited everytime I come home and just want to snuggle and eat food. I hope there will be more advances in the next year of ways to counteract animal cruelty; vigilance must never cease. Have a good Christmas and holiday season.

Hello to all the two-legged walkers and their four-legged rulers!

It's finally getting to be fall here in Kansas, which is nice considering how hot it's been this year. It will be nicer for me and the four children: Howard, Dustye, Pennye, and Buster. They are tired of the heat no matter how often they get to stay in the house. We are currently fighting the battle of Buster and the outside-potty routine. Buster is a very special young man; he is a rescue dog who was beaten in the head with a hammer. He's only a little guy (dachshund) so he's lucky to be alive.… Continue

Lisa,
I am glad that you like the "Baggage" poem. I, too, collect quotes. I have a separate collection just for animals, which is currently a 162-page word doc, while the rest only add up to 123 pages. LOL Here is another one you might like:

Ms. Whalen wrote this poem, originally entitled "Tray's Poem", in honor of her dog, Tray, and all senior dogs who await a new home and deserve a second chance at life and happiness.

One By One
By Leslie Whalen

One by One, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw through the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

You would think we live in the country, but we don't. Actually, in June we moved from a 2-bedroom apartment at Villa del Mar, where we lived for 12 years, into a small 3-bedroom house we bought. When we first rented at Villa del Mar, 12 years ago, we had 2 cats. Even though when we signed our 12th-year lease we had 4 dogs and 9 cats, when it came time to renew, the manager told us in order to renew our lease that we would have to meet the 2-pet limitation. No way were we going to get rid of our pets...our family members!
Our little house we are buying fits our needs perfectly and is only 1/2 mile from where we lived before. We are now in the Delano District at Seneca and 2nd ST N. We are still within walking distance of the River Walks and the Keeper of the Plains Plaza where we walk our dogs most every day. http://www.360wichita.com/Attractions/KeeperofthePlains.html
Our 88-year-old house has separately fenced front and back yards with covered porches. The dogs get to play in the back yard, but still want their walks every 4 hours or so to do their "business". LOL
It is hard enough to leave the house long enough to run errands, let alone go to visit anyone... As it is, after we have been gone for an hour or two, the dogs greet us like we are The Beatles when they first became famous! LOL
